Alberta Guide
Applications Open — Launch 2025/26

Alberta is on track to become Canada's second competitive regulated iGaming market. The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) commission began accepting operator applications in 2024, with a market launch expected in 2025 or 2026.

The framework is closely modelled on Ontario's iGO structure but with one important difference: AGLC directly operates the market itself rather than through a separate subsidiary entity. This means all compliance, licensing, and player dispute resolution runs through AGLC.

What This Means for Alberta Players

Licensed Operators Coming
Major brands already active in Ontario (bet365, BetMGM, Betway, etc.) are expected to apply for Alberta licences, giving players access to familiar, trusted operators.
Mandatory RG Tools
Alberta's framework will require deposit limits, self-exclusion, and reality checks — the same protections Ontario players have had since 2022.
Dispute Resolution Pathway
Licensed operators must have a formal complaints process. Unresolved disputes escalate to AGLC directly. No more relying on MGA or Kahnawake.
18+ Age Limit — Lower Than Ontario
Alberta sets the minimum age at 18, one year lower than Ontario's 19+. All licensed operators must enforce verified age checks at registration.
Until Launch: Offshore Remains Grey
Until the Alberta market opens, private online casino play remains technically in a grey zone. Offshore operators are not provincially licensed.

What We Monitor

Compliance Standards

Every casino reviewed on CanadaCasinos.io is evaluated against these six core compliance dimensions. A casino that fails any mandatory standard is flagged or removed from our recommendations.

RTP Transparency
All licensed Ontario operators must publish verified Return-to-Player percentages for their game catalogue. We cross-check reported averages against third-party testing lab data and flag operators whose claimed RTPs cannot be independently verified.
Required in Ontario
Bonus Advertising
AGCO Standard 2 prohibits misleading bonus claims. Wagering requirements, game restrictions, and expiry dates must be prominently displayed. We test actual bonus offers against advertised terms and report discrepancies to iGO.
AGCO Standard 2
Responsible Gambling Tools
Licensed operators must offer deposit limits, session time limits, reality checks, and self-exclusion via the iGO portal from day one of a player's account. We verify these tools are accessible, functional, and take immediate effect.
Required in Ontario
Payout Compliance
Licensed operators must process withdrawals within their publicly stated timeframes. We track withdrawal speed in our reviews, and persistent delays beyond the operator's own stated terms are escalated as potential AGCO Standard 5 violations.
AGCO Standard 5
Age Verification
Rigorous identity verification must be completed before a player's first withdrawal, or sooner under risk-based triggers. We confirm each operator uses approved identity verification providers and that documents are checked — not just self-declared.
AGCO Standard 1
Game Fairness / RNG
All games offered by licensed operators must use RNGs certified by an AGCO-approved testing laboratory: GLI, eCOGRA, iTech Labs, or BMM Testlabs. We verify that each operator's game providers carry current approvals from one of these labs.
AGCO Standard 3
